What is the ruling on wearing wedding rings or engagement rings?

As long as certain conditions are met (listed below) . It is permitted for men to wear ONE ring and for women to wear more than one ring.

For men:
The ring must be made from silver, which in weight must be less than one mithqaal (approx 4.374g).

  1. one ring must be worn only
    it is Sunnah to wear the ring on the right hand
    to wear the ring on the left hand is mubah (neither forbidden nor recommended).
  2. it is Sunnah to wear the ring so the stone is facing the palm (i.e. the stone is on the ‘inside’ with the ring facing the palm).

For women:

  1. The ring(s) must be made from gold or silver (there are no weight limits).
  2. To wear the ring so the stone is facing away from finger (i.e. the stone is on the ‘outside’ and facing away from the finger)

All types of gems stones and precious diamonds are permitted for both men and women. Finally, other non-precious metals are NOT permitted to be worn for both males and females.
